Recorders

Celia is a specialist teacher of the recorder with extensive performing and teaching experience. Her approach to teaching recorder, centres on the focal techniques of Air, Tongue and Fingers while enabling a creative and exploratory approach to uncovering the expressive details in the pieces performed. She promotes the understanding and application of historically informed playing while nurturing pupils own personal responses to the music they play.

Celia teaches recorder to all levels, ages and abilities and can also offer shared lessons to well matched duos.

Piano

Celia teaches piano from Grades 1-5. She studied piano at the Junior RNCM and has continued to use her piano skills through the teaching of individual piano lessons as well as supporting and accompanying pupils of the recorder. Her training and experience as a musician and teacher enables her to support pianists musically but also through refining and advising on effective practice. Celia balances her own classical approach with encouraging pupils to explore their own musical tastes. She prepares pupils for graded ABRSM exams where suitable and in keeping with players aims.

Music Theory

Celia teaches ABRSM graded music theory from Grades 1-5. She has experience of teaching theory on an individual basis and of class based lessons at the Peterborough Centre for Young Musicians.  A sound understanding of music theory improves general musicianship skills and can help support GCSE Music.

Theory lessons are offered in their own right or alongside piano / recorder lessons. Intensive blocks of lessons are available by request. A pass at ABRSM Grade 5 theory is required for ABRSM practical exams at Grades 6-8.
